Help with Hotpoint/Currys?

Hello I bough a Hotpoint washing machine in May 2006. I had a years warranty on but it's now expired.The machine broke this morning so I rang Hotpoint direct about getting it repaired.I was told I either had to pay £89.99 now or so many installments of £15.99 a month to enable me to get it repaired.I asked about The Sales of Goods act and surely I should be coverd by this but was told as my warranty has expired and I didn't purchase an extended one I don't have a leg to stand on and have to pay either now or by direct debit to be able to have it reapaired.I was also told that if it is beyond repair then they will cancel my payment and I will be left with no washing machine and have to buy a new one.
Can someone please help me? Is what they are saying true?

The manufacturer has no legal responsibility to do anything outside the terms of the warranty.

Your rights under SOGA are with the retailer - Currys.

As the item is over six months old they might require you to prove it was faulty when you got it, eg by getting an engineer's report, for them to repair or replace the item under SOGA (and reimburse you for the report).

Faults due to wear and tear and misuse, btw, aren't covered by Soga.

Hotpoint are absolutely correct. Your warranty has expired and they have no liability to repair under the warranty.

The Sale of Goods Act does protect you and does apply here, but it applies to the retailer, not the manufacturer. Your claim under SOGA is against Currys, not Hotpoint. You have no contract with Hotpoint.
