| Re: hi need info on broken laptop To be honest laptops are different from all manufacturers and as such just dealing with PC problems like a local shop they (in currys eyes) wouldnt be qualified to look at it, they are going to want a dedicated laptop repair company who just specialise in laptop repairs to look at it your avg PC shop is not qualified to make engineering statements. |

"Where in the UK are you debs? - I could asses the laptop for free and if find no accidental damage will happily bill currys for my time.
I work as an IT contractor and they will be billed from a registered company, just depends wether they take my word for it - they'd probably say they prefer their own techies word"
thanks for the offer but I am going to go with stonelaughter and send the letter cheers much mate.
I do have a wee question for you thought that I had wrote in my letter to Currys I asked them to tell me how a engineer can define accidental damage to any other sort of damage ?????

You're assuming that because you've asked the question, the nice man at the other end will answer it.
No... this whole game is about choosing which questions TO IGNORE. Hence my idea earlier of accepting their offer to have the laptop examined at their expense. Your LBA is ignoring half their case because what they're saying is irrelevant - you're picking up ONLY on the points you're interested in raising, and totally discarding their points out of hand. That's the trick; knowing which of their points to discard. |

| | Platinum Account Customer | Re: hi need info on broken laptop accidental damage could come about through either dropping the item or inserting an item (liquid or solid) into it - or if you were daft enough sticking it into a microwave.
Dropping would easiest be seen internally by damage to the HD and or some part of the molded fittings coming loose. This could then short part of the PCB or disrupt the circuit in some other form which may lead to a larger than normal power drain from the power cable which could lead it to melt.
TBH thats all rubbish - the chances that something has been damaged internally and caused a surge in the current of the levels to melt a power cable is tiny. If there was going to be damage from a knock or a drop it would be noticable outside the laptop.
As to liquids being introduced to the laptop it would equally be noticable in residue and or any labels on parts either being discoloured or lifting, also this would more times than not, not produce the effect you described but short something somewhere on the motherboard and simply kill a part of it - resulting in the laptop failing to boot.
All in all their assesment is probably rubbish, as someone above said it really needs to be examined by someone with specialist laptop knowledge which I doubt the instore techie has
If possible try get them to state what they think the accidental damage was - ie dropping, spillage etc adn that will be easier to rule out than ruling out everything

| Re: hi need info on broken laptop I totally agree find out what they claim has been done to it if they claim spillage there would be residue on the keyboard membranes/ on the PCB etc
If they claim its been dropped there would be case damage, and even if there was you could claim she dropped it when the lead melted onto her in shock
Dont tip them off about your suspicions though if you ask them just get the facts no need to give them any ammo |

| Re: hi need info on broken laptop I was referring to your posts regarding using an alternative engineer to look at it by deliberately misunderstanding their letter, advising what to look for if they claim certain types of accidental damage! |

When they get that bit of paper, they will act. | What would you like the court order to say? What are the fees for issuing a court order? Can anyone issue a court order?
Realist if you look at the "Letter Before Action" I wrote for Debs earlier, you'll see that we are arranging for Debs to take them to court to recover the cost of the laptop plus interest.
Oh, and the answers to my questions?
1. Nothing; we don't need a "court order". We need a Small Claims Court Claim.
2. Minimum £150 as an Order would be heard under a Part 8 Procedure, and NOT in the Small Claims Court.
3. No. Only a court can issue an Order and they would carefully consider the legal issues around a request for one. |

I never sent it back because they have already examined it and did not think it would make any difference.
Second letter was Letter before Action think this is where I might have went a bit wrong I gave them only 7 days to reply to Letter before Action because a was so peved with them from last letter waiting till 14 working days for them to contact me. They have not bothered to reply to the letter before Action.
So do I sent them a letter stating all the times I have tried to contact them give them another chance to respond or start small claim ??????
also sent letter recorded delivery and they did receive the letter
