Default mastercare/whatever happens advice needed

i purchased a toshiba 28z27b television on around 2004 2 weeks ago we were deccorating and my wife knocked the tv off the stand and smashed the glass screen and suround and possible the tube as well

not a problem we have home insurance and also a currys 5 year mastercare insurance

called mastercare (whatever happens) and they arrange pickup but as i can only do weekends they arranged to pick it up on sunday 22nd July between 1 - 5 pm great i thought then yesterday morning i was in the shower and there was a knock at the door at 9 am 2 guys wanting to pick the tv up as i was soaking wet and had just a towel around me i asked my young childeren to ask them to wait 5 minutes hilst i get some clothes on, as i wasnt going to let them in with 2 young kids and me upstairs, they shouted up the stair sorry guv we cant wait and with that they drove off

after lots of phone calls they couldnt come back so i took it apon myself to take the tv to the currys shop i bought it from and let it be pick up from there as i wasnt going to wait another week and now as it is they cant pick it up from the store untill wednesday even though the store manager says it wont be repaired as a) they dont make it anymore b) it would cost to much

well ok so they are going to sort out vouchers out for me to get a replacement my question is the tosh cost me £600 originally and mastercare have said i will get vouchers for a same spec tv

well currys dont make CRT tv's any more so chances are they will price up a LCD but will they price up a toshiba or will it be a cheap matsui or similar as toshiba is by far a better make and if i had wanted a matsui i would have only paid £300-400 originally not the £600

sorry for the long post but need some help

thanks in advance

You will get vouchers to the value of the TV as it is now, and you can use those as part or full payment towards any TV in current stock...

Sorry Forest, but that is incorrect. Vouchers will be issued to cover the cost of replacing the set with like for like specification. As the type of set (tube) is no longer in production, the vouchers will cover the cost of a suitable replacement. In this case a very good upgrade to a flat panel type set.
Contrary to popular belief, the warranty does not cover exact replacement but, should be equal in specification. When going for a replacement check that all the spec is as you had before. eg. same number of scart sockets. Any divergence is grounds to appeal for a higher settlement and will generally be dealt with in a sympathetic manner. Don't push your luck though! Manufacturer, reputation or personal choice is not considered, merely like for like specification. Talk to the store and ask for opinions of the sales staff, they will be interested in getting the best deal as for them it is another sale and counts towards meeting their targets. A good store will try and meet your requirements by contacting Whatever Happens, if needed, to increase the value of your vouchers. Most of all, remember you are dealing with people, not machines. A little friendly banter will go a long way to winning the staff over to your side and gaining allies in your quest. After all, you may be dealing with a fellow CAG subscriber!

Life should be so easy!!

Unfortunately, this CAG subscriber won't there much longer either. I'm moving on to another retailer with a much better salary.

But, the advice given is, or should be, the same for any branch. In my experience anyone who smiles and asks politely will be given the help needed. It is when folk get irritated or pushy that we retail staff switch off! Good manners cost nothing and can get you all you want without any stress.
