Default Nervous Newbie says hello.

Hello everyone,

I happened upon this forum by accident, and although it appears very daunting at the moment, I'm reassured by the fact that there is such a site to begin with!

I'm having multiple problems at the moment:

1. Co-Op Bank have just taken a £19.50 'commission' from me, for a £13.50 refused DD. When one considers that I only receive £50 per week Jobseekers Allowance, to live on each week, that's quite a chunk . The DD was for NTL Broadband, which they didn't send me an account notification, as promised, before they demanded the payment. They maintain that they send their notifications via e-mail, not snail mail as the salesperson promised they would at the time of signing me up. I've written/spoken to NTL, to ask them to refund the ammount, as I believe that it's their fault. I'm still going to complain to the Co-Op though, as these charges are simply outrageous, imo.

2. British Gas have consistently taken credit from my top-up meter, which they weren't entitled to. They've verbally admitted their mistake, and that I am entitled to a £100 plus refund. Although I've written to them twice now, even threatening them with the regulator, they don't seem to be in any hurry to make the refund, or alter my meter.

3. Capital One credit card. The ammount of fees/charges, levied by this company due to one late payment, caused me to go over my limit and, therefore, incur further charges, which I simply couldn't afford to pay. I fear that this one will be the most difficult to tackle.

Anyhow, I feel a bit more positive, knowing that there is a resource like this forum to help me battle along. I'll be more than happy to make a donation to the kind soles who've set this up, when and if I'm successful.

Cheerio for now, and good luck to everyone in your respective battles.

Hi, and welcome - don't be nervous - be relieved you have found this site and you will have lots of people supporting you and giving you good tips and advice. There's a thread on here somewher about the banks not being allowed to take from benefits - I'm not sure if this includes JSA but I will find it and come back to you.

British Gas - a long term problem with utility companies trying to get money back for them -and they give you such a hard time if you don't give it to them! You may want to try one more letter, or you could look through the template library on here and find the Letter Before Action, modify it to suit yourself, and be a bit more threatening with them.

Capitol One - don't let it daunt you - there are thousands on here claiming back from CC issuers. Search for capital one in the search button on the blue tool bar above, and read up about other people dealing with them.

You are in good company here, good luck!

Many thanks for that ladybird, I wasn't even aware that they couldn't take money from my benefits. I've written to the Co-Op, over the weekend, and demanded that they make an immediate refund. I've given them 7 working days, and threatened them with the F. S Ombudsman if they don't. It was very useful, to be able to quote the law, chapter and verse, so thanks again.

Many thanks to you also, UKA. There's tons of stuff to get through, and I've been having a read over the weekend, as well as firing off a few preliminary letters: just to see what their response will be. Hopefully, by the time they've responded, I'll have a better idea of what I'm doing. Thanks, once again, you've both been very helpful.

I cannot underestimate the relief that I felt when I found this site, and everyone seems so helpful and nice. It's just a relief to know that we're not all isolated. Makes me even madder though, when I keep thinking how those useless MP's are allowing these companies to prey on us like this. And they have the cheek to wonder why people don't bother voting for them?

Scales are in the bottom of the blue shaded frame to the left of each post, next to the blob that shows if you're online or not. Try clicking mine as a test If you hover your mouse over them you get a yellow tooltip saying 'Add to posters reputation'

Thanks for that, Martin. I planned to start a new thread, as and when I received any responses from my correspondence (none as yet) I've been busy trying to gen myself up on how others are tackling similar problem's. There sure is a lot to read.
