Default TV Problem

Hello all, this is the first place I thought of to get an answer to my problem - hope you can help.

My Dad bought an LCD TV from Comet on 29/04/07 and last Friday it more or less stopped working. Basically, the TV has frozen on BBC1 and we can't change the channel unless we turn digital off and watch terrestrial, which is obviously rubbish. I thought I'd try to reset the TV by re-scanning for channels, but I can access that part of the menu.
The TV cost £719.10 (it was £799.00, but my brother had a 10% discount) and my Dad says that it only comes with a one year's worth of guarantee, but I am sure I heard or read somewhere that if the product is something expensive like a TV, the company selling it should fix or replace it, regardless of guarantee, for a up to a few years.

Am I right? How do I go about getting the TV repaired? I have yet to speak to them as I thought I'd get advice on here first.

Thanks in advance.

You are sort of correct. The Sale fo Goods Act implies terms into a contract, namely that goods are of reasonable quality, durable, as described etc. These rights cannot be taken away.

Warranties are additional to statutory rights, and give a few extras.

You need to write to Comet and request that they repair it as the goods do not conform to teh contract in terms of breach of s. 14 (which deals with durability). It is however up to you to prove this (which may involve getting an engineers report).

do keep us updated and good luck.

There is of course the chance that there is nothing wrong with the tv.

Digital requires a stronger signal than normal terrestrial and one of the symptons is freezing.

Give them a ring and see what they say.
