Default Capital One credited less to my account than I paid

I opened my Capital One credit card back in February 2004.

The first statement I have from them had a lot of transactions on it, including one with EasyJet which I paid on behalf of my mother in law, and one with Boots, which I paid on behalf of a friend.

My mother in law, and my friend, both gave me cheques for the amounts of their transactions, which I paid direct to Capital One (I can't decide how I paid them, as there's no bank stamp on the statement - however on the statement showing the payment, the trasnsaction is recorded as "payment (bank) received), and I made a £50 standing order payment direct from my bank.

The cheque from my friend was for £65, the cheque from my mother in law was £369.94 and my standing order, as I said, was £50.

However, although the payments total £484.94, the payments applied to the account only total £481.94 - a £3 difference.

A measly sum, I know, but still their error, and I have been paying interest on that amount, presumably, ever since.

I want to write to them to query this, and to ask for a suitable amount to be credited to the account to represent the interest that I have been charged on this amount in the intervening months.

Any ideas how I should word the request? I think I need to get this bit sorted before going after them for the £580 worth of charges (so far) applied to my account!

see if you can get a breakdown of the amount from Cap one, ie 2 cheques for x amount + the Standing Order amount.

You could ask the people who gave you the cheques if they'd mind providing copies of the stubs and the relevent entry on their bank statement, but they may refuse, and even if they agree might have to get a copy of the statement from their bank due to the length of time.

It's possible they've been debited with an amount £3 less too, if the cheque was keyed in wrong. If you paid via a bank then it will be their error, not Capital One's.

andy99- that will be my next advice, getting copies of front and back of cheques once cap one have confirmed amounts, because that should confirm which cheque had not been credited correctly

Are you sure this was not a charge by easyjet for paying by credit card as they often do make this charge in addition to whatever you owe them for the flights.

Additionally, if you paid through a bank where you didn't have an account, they may have deducted a "counter fee" (which tend to be about £3 - £5) - although they should have warned you before doing so.

andy99-we wouldn't take the credit if not a bank customer. The fee for NW for paying a bill with cash and no arrangement from company, is £10 and Barclays even higher at £12.50. the fee would be added not taken off, as that would be a charge by stealth which we don't do.

Barclays shouldn't take it either, but when I worked there, if for some reason they did, the charge was £5. We used to be able to take the bills subject to payment from anyone, and occasionally people would ask us to reduce the amount they were paying by the amount of our fee, although if I ever took one I'd get them to alter the amount of their credit slip and sign it before acceptance.
