Default Petition against non-DD charges

I think this is in the right place, apologies if this is already covered somewhere!

As you will be aware, many companies, including Sky, Virgin, many utilitiy companies, and many others, charge you up to £5 per month for paying by means other than by Direct Debit.

I won't go into the ins and outs of the situation, it's being covered before, but anyway, here's the petition: Petition to: To make it illegal for companies to impose an administration charge if not wishing to pay Via Direct Debit.

Thanks peeps,

Raven

BTDT. Shame you couldn't get BBC's Watchdog to trail it on their Wednesday programme. They clearly don't understand the problem as they talked about it being looked at by Ofcom when it more properly should be dealt with by the OFT.

Thanks! I thought it ought to be somewhere else! Also thanks to those who signed it!

There is a few more signatures on there, but there needs to be many more - tell everyone about it!

By the way, as a personal note, have managed to get 6 non-dd charges refunded by Orange - £18 off the next bill

Does anyone know of a list of companies that charge, and how much they charge, for non-payment by direct debit?

I would be very interested.

Well, if it is a telecom company, there will be a charge. HOWEVER, be aware that a number of companies will ONLY accept payment by plastic and NO OTHER method, so it isn't just an issue on the additional cost levied for non DD, but the fact once they have your CC or DC number, their taking your money when they want, AND they can say they don't make additional charges.

Seems pointless - there were more supporters wanting to ensure the BBC wouldn't sell TV Centre, than cared about these non-DD charges. OFCOM seem to be the best hope at the moment - see their current Consultation on 'Additional Payments', you can still respond to this.

Actually, 02 is still technically a Spanish-owned wireless company. They have no wired infrastructure of their own, and simply rent from other carriers ('virtual' in effect). As for any benefit, I do recall someone complaining that their mobile phone bill had a non-DD penalty, so don't sign up for too long a contract....!

contract runs out in 8 weeks time and one thing I will be stipulating when I re-sign is that I had better not be charged for non DD and if they do start charging I can leave without penalty!
