Nik,

Welcome to CAG Forums,

I've never had any dealings with Brighthouse before, but from what I understand from other peoples posts about Brighthouse, I would highly doubt that you would be able to walk in and pay the £285, unless it said "CASH PRICE". It is most likely thats how much it is, but you have to pay weekly/monthly (what ever it is) plus take certain policies and cover with them, thus making the TV a higher price than it is actually worth.

You could always go in with the cash/credit card/means to pay, and say I'd like that TV, when they start filling in forms, simply tell them you wish to pay cash outright, this is where I suspect they'll tell you its not an option and give some bovine excrement excuse. At that point you either have the option to go along with them and pay the over inflated prices or walk out no worse off.

Nik, It may well be false advertising, BUT on the price card or where ever the price is shown, it may and most likely will have small print, or something like "Subject to ...." whatever the subject to might be.

To be perfectly honest, a deal like that a 47" TV for £285 sounds to good to be true, and I'm sure you have heard the phrase "If it sounds to good to be true, then it most likely is" It's marketing like that to sucker people into the shop.

You could always give it a blast, but I doubt that will be the cash price, most likely "agreement price" without any of the "optional" covers and policies that aren't so optional.

Nik,

It won't work going in trying to shout for a bargin, remain cool headed and calm, at the end of the day, if the manager says no, nothing you can do about it, he/she has the right to sell or not to sell to anyone.

ah i didn't know that i thought no reasonable amount of legal tender in reasonable denominations could be refused but maybe I'm confusing it with something else. I've another idea anyway, ask what the early settlement figure is and weigh it up from there, it may still be a bargain, but i doubt it. Thanks mate

You could always try that and consider the early repayment option, but remember it is Brighthouse. :P

I've just checked the website, it says they accept full cash payments. Mind you all their prices before credit look to be about twice as much as other stores. My stereo which was £160 odd in currys and now out of date costs £280 cash full payment with brighthouse.

The tv is likely to be refurbished or reposed, there is nothing stopping you from buying it but a word to the wise...if the tv gets any manufacture problems Brighthouse will be unwilling to do anything because YOU brought it and own it OUT RIGHT, this does not mean to say you don't have any rights but if it turns out the item is a 2nd rather than brand new then you will have problems as you don't have the same rights with new items.

So the question would be... why would you want to by from them?, you may think your the one getting the bargin but ask plenty questions before you purchase I am sure with the cash money you have, CURRY'S ARGOS, TYLERS, COMET and I know not far from me Comet have a warehouse for slightly damaged and refurbished WITH 12MTHS warranty.

its all a moot point now anyway. i went there this morning asked about the tv and its already been sold apparently although theres no sold sign on it. i told the goof ASSistant that i thought what they'd done was a shady underhanded advertising practice and that if the telly had been sold why was it still in the shop? I asked him where the sold sign was he said, "im just going to get one". My reply, "make sure you do mate, i'll be back later to check". Went back no sold sign, telly still there so i went n told trading standards. Im very thankfull i didnt have the opportunity to make a transaction with them, they sound like the Rackman of retail outlets.

Hi Nik F, and welcome to CAG

As others have suggested, my guess is that the TV for sale at the "knock down manager's special" price will be at least a year old, probably repaired and almost CERTAINLY recently repossessed.

Having said that, it may well be a bargain! And, if the price advertised is £285 then you should be able to walk in with £285 and buy it. Simple as that!

As to what warranty you would get, I don't know... Probably nothing - unless you buy BrightHouse Optional Service Cover!!!!!

Of course, the manager is hoping to snare a regular customer into taking the TV on a hire purchase agreement, which will mean that, after 29.9% APR, OSC and DLC cover, the total price will rocket to around £700...

Personally, I'd just walk away....

Cheers
Lefty
