Question Too much money?

I lost my father a month or so ago and will soon obtain probate - ie his bank accounts and house become mine.

His estate will take our assets well above the £6/£16k limits, but might not do one we have spent money on a 'shopping list' we have. I don't believe any of it is excessive - no trips around the world or anything like that - but will the benefits people stop our support because we have 'deprived ourself of income'?

Our benefits are:

Me: Income Support / Carers Allowance / Child Tax Credit
Wife: Income Support / Incapacity Benefit / DLA

Our shopping list is:

Clear mortgage (IS currently pays interest so they will save there)

Extend/Refit kitchen to allow more space & make it more practical for disabled wife to use kitchen. Cheapest way to extend is a 'conservatory' at the side of the kitchen for laundry stuff to go in, would it make a difference if it was a 'proper' brick-built extension? This extension will also provide space for powered wheelchair that NHS will eventually provide, a condition of having one is that you have somewhere suitable for it to be stored/charged. Major cost in kitchen would be to have the current floor dug out and re-laid because the 70 year old quarry tile floor is uneven and therefore unsuitable for disabled access.

Alterations in downstairs bathroom to include replacement of current (leaking) bath and replacement of slippy tiled floor with proper non-slip flooring. (Council are installing upstairs loo/shower for wife on DFG).

Recarpeting lounge and hall/stairs, current carpet is at least 10 years old and has been down since before we moved in.

Re-decorating lounge

Purchase of private pension for my wife & I (is there a limit?)

Any advice appreciated, especially from those 'in the trade' like Joa.

Even inheritence they class as income so if the money is over 6K then they will stop benefits, I'm not sure about carers Allowance or incapacity benefit, but they will definately stop the income support. Any benefit that is means tested they will stop or reduce.
