| | Classic Account Customer | tax return fine Hi everyone,I would be gratefull of any help or advice, thanks ,last year my partner fell ill around the time that he was supposed to fill in his tax return,he was on painkillers and felt too out of it to do the tax return .he was also too ill to work so we couldn,t afford an accountant.before he got ill he was self employed but only earning a low wage less than £100 weekly and we were on child and working tax credits .the inland revenue fined him £100 and we appealed on the grounds that he was ill and even got a doctors note ,but they still fined him.anyway this year they didn,t even bother to send him the tax return forms, so my partner emailed them to see if he could do the tax return online, the system said that they would send out a password ,but when he recieved it and tried to do the tax return online, thier systems where down for 3 days,so they fined us again another £100,we have appealed again ,but as we are still on a low income and recieving child and working tax credits ,are they allowed to fine us like this or can we fight on the the grounds that we are on a low income as well as it bieng thier fault. kind regards angnnig |

| Re: tax return fine An accountant i know has said he will have to reclaim a whole heap of fines issued against clients due to the 'crash', so it's certainly a problem that the tax office know they have to deal with. |

| Re: tax return fine Hi angnnig,
If you know your UTR (unique tax reference) and you are registered to file online you should (I think) still be able to enter the 2006/2007 year electronically. On that basis you don't need a paper copy as the HMRC software asks you all the relevant questions and does all the calculations for you.

| Re: tax return fine Hi Angnnig,
Are you talking about the "gateway" password or "HMRC log in" password.?
Your password should be initially sent by the goverment gateway, you only have 28 days to use it. If you fail to log in to the site you will have to ask for another.
If you are talking about your "HMRC log in" you should be able to reset within the software by following the on screen prompts.
