Default terminal illness benefits

my mums partner has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and apparently as there are 2 family members living with them who are nearly 40 and work for a living whilst paying a pittance towards household costs they will not be eligible for any benefits. This is stress upon stress as at this moment in time there will not be any money to cover funeral costs never mind carers etc, my mum is not in the best of health herself and the only income they have is a pension, they could not get pension credit due to them living with them. surely there is some help out there, dont know what to do

I think the info that they are not entitled to any benefits is wrong - my parents had my bro living with them (earning plenty) whilst dad was ill, they got incapacity benefit and DLA plus council tax benefit (reduced to reflect other adult in house) and pension credit, when dad died we got a funeral grant (didn't cover the full cost but helped).

I would speak to Macmillan and also social services for advise. With DLA there is a fsat track for terminal cases. I would get all the forms asap and fill them in - you have nothing to lose.

My mum received DLA (mobility and personal care ) at the higher rate.My mums partner was working but this did not affect any of there tax credits etc as it was not counted. My mum received lots of help from the macmillain nurses and they advised her with benefits she was entitled to.

Helly,

Sorry for your news, but I 101% agree with all the posts in this thread, get on to Macmillan, local authority Social Services and also DWP (Via Job Centre Plus).

Just because someone who is earning lives at the address does not prevent them from claiming benefits entitled to.

Bit late in the day but you may qualify for DLA at the highest component. However, be aware that because of the confusion over changes to claiming benefits - a good site to visit would be YOUR ABLE for more info on this and other disability benefits if you wish to - things are becoming more complex, confusing to claimants. Than ever before.

You can claim DLA regardless of being in work, or having a partner who is in work or relative living at home who is. It is not dependent upon income. As far as I know. It's awarded on mobility. And it's not the same as making a claim for IB. Very different benefits. Just the same as you can continue to claim DLA if you are out of work, on other disability benefits, then find work.

Be aware, however, that very often advice given by DWP or Jobcentre Plus is only as good as the knowledge of the person you are talking to by phone or in person. In fact, some advice given by DWP, depending upon whom you speak to has led to people not claming what they are entitled to or, if they do, not at the rate they should. DLA is in different stages. And caring component may be available to a carer. Whomever is claiming will in all likelihood be subjected to a medical, which would probably be at home. This is done by a DWP appointed doctor - most likely from ATOS or whichever is the order of the day these days with DWP.

Helly1 it's probably a little late now or maybe not but visit your able website as I mention above. If you are not familiar with how the benefits system works ... it's invaluable. Just a thought. I wish you well.
