Self assment, TAX office messed up.

Hi all.

My other half was self employed until about 18 months ago and she had notified the TAX office that she is now employed. However last year we received the usual self assessment TAX form so she called the TAX office and explained the situation to them. She was told to write a letter to the office to clear up the problem. This she did but again received reminder letters. Now at this point she cant remember what she did and unfortunately didn't send any thing by recorded post. We have now been fined for not returning the self assessment form and I am curious if it is possible to request the last self assessment form we filled in to see if we did state that she was no longer self employed?

If you write and explain the position, whether or not she ticked the box on her last return, they will cancel the fine. Just make it clear that she no longer needs to fill in a tax return.

I think I will get her to write a letter a go to the TAX office and hand give it to someone. At leaste she can then speak to someone face to face.

I will let you know what happens.
