working tax credits

i'm due to start a new job and want to claim WTC for the first time, how do I go about doing this and does my status as a student automatically discount me from WTC?

Click on this link to go to the Tax Credit Section on the HMRC website. There is a section there that tells you if you qualify or not

thanks wino. I have another question, when i put my details into entitledto the figures don't look right, it says I'll get £400 a month!! surely that's not right? I mean that's more than I earn

I'm on a very low salary, around £180 - 200 a month doing telemarketing. i receive £180-0dd in WTCs, so I don't know where the £400 figure comes from. the best thing to do is contact the Tax Credits helpline explain your situation and how much you should be receiving in wages and they should be able to give you some sort of answer.
