Incap Benifit

Hi all.

At the age of 16 when i left school i got depression and anxiety. I got incapity benifit for 2yrs till i was 18. I had to re apply again. I saw the doctor at the assiment but i got a letter a few weeks later saying i was able to work even though i was on 60mg of prozac and couldnt do anything and could get sick notes from my doctor. I appealed but the appeal went against me. So i applyed for income support and got that. 6 months later i could apply for incapity benifit again so i did. I went to see the doctor at the assiment and a few weeks later i got accepted. I thought i would get more money again as living on income support was hardly enough. But was i wrong i was getting the same amount as i was on income support. They only thing different was that i didnt have to keep sending in sick notes. I phone up DWP and asked why i wasnt getting more money. The person on the phone said i hadnt paided in enough national insurance, but i had never worked in my life and couldnt.

What do you guys reckon i should do as income support is hardly enough to live on.

Hi Ryan; when did you last see a welfare adviser for a income-maximisation assessment?
Can you look at your award letter and check whether you are getting lower rate or higher rate of short-term IB or long-term IB?
Are you in privately rented accommodation? Have you ever applied for Disability Living Allowance?
The difference between the payments of IB which you were receiving previously and now ay be due to a different rate of IB. Please call Community Legal Advice for more personal advice, because IB subject is quite complex and the adviser may have other questions. Have the award letter in hand and make a note of the events in chronological order as the periods of receiving various benefits can be linked.
If the Community Legal Advice can't help you on the spot, they will make further appointment or find a local source of advice for you.
