Default anti virus suggestions please

Got new computer and it has vista home premium Sp1 32 bit if that means anything to anyone and need an antivirus program for it. It came with a trial version of Bulldog but had to remove because it had issues with windows updates and just messed up the comp. So any suggestions as to a good one, preferably free if possible.

Used AVG free edition on old comp which had XP but don't want to download that if it not compatible with Vista.

On a side note beginning to notice alot of stuff not compatible with vista, thought would need a new printer until had to download different drivers for it. Nightmare. Rant over

Yes, but:

PC Pro: Product Reviews: Labs: Antivirus software: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

Hmmm... You don't get that with Avast.

i'm a real technovirgin - so be gentle with me....
we've always used norton, but lately, things were so slow it was like the old dial up days - norton sub was running out so o/h went to pc world and got kaspersky for about £20. it picked up 499 suspect items straight away and now pc is running mucho quicker.... hope that helps

I'll second the kaspersky software. Used most of the others, norton, macafee and nod32. Norton and macafee went a little resource crazy and slowed my system down. Nod32 is a good anti virus software with updates every hour. I went over to the nod32 internet security and it was that sensitive I was blocked out most of the time.

Now I use kaspersky internet security and have had no problems since.

If you get the kaspersky 3 licence edition from pc world they offer the 2009 version upgrade for free. I've got it on 3 machines at the moment and only used one of the licences so far (?)

I have got rid of many viruses on many pc's and laptops for friends and family. Even my own laptop. One of my friends had 811 viruses. Had to do 5 scans for that one but it got rid of them all. All others have taken just one.

Like Bookworm I go for AVAST.

It's free, its not intrusive, it doesn't slow your system down but just works quietly in the background.

Uninstall your existing security software before installing Avast for maximum effect.
