Default anyone heard of fireproof paint ?

I am having a loft conversion and the councils surveyor has just been and said I have to replace all my doors and arcetrades (sp) and put in fireproof ones to get the work passed .Thing is they are the original victorian ones and I obviously don't want to replace them.As a compromise he has said I can use fireproof paint but he will need to see proof/A certificate that it will hold a fire back for 30 mins .

Has anyone heard of this type of paint ? I have googled it and found fire resistant but can't find anything that states it's fireproof for 30 mins.
The surveyor did say its available, but expensive .

Hiya Janet, try searching for intumecent (think thats the right spelling) paint.

Its basically a paint that expands into a fire proof "foam" if its burned and increases the fire rating of whatever its painted onto.

Thanks loadssssssss pete ..I saw that paint and wasn't sure if that was what I was suppose to be buying . so does all intumecent paint hold back a fire for 30 mins ? as they seem to be graded and the one's I have looked at so far don't mention a 30 minute holdback .

i'm sooooooooo confused with all this ..I bet I buy the wrong one

Here's one just down the road in Manchester. Ring them and ask:
Intumescent paint, flame retardant paints and fireproof varnish from Thermoguard.

Find one of the companies who supply it and call them, they will have information sheets on everything they stock.

If you tell them where the paint is going they should be able to tell you which one you want, what the fire rating will be and how to apply it, you will need this info for your building reg's surveyor anyway to prove you have met his requirements.

Fire Retardant Services / Fire Proof Paint Home Page: Specialist Intumescent Paint and Fire Stopping Distributors and Specifiers

These people claim:
Quote:
Our HW range intumescent coatings (white or clear) are used to achieve a BS 476 Parts 6 and 7 (1987) fire protection for up to 60 minutes and Class 0 and Class 1 resistance to surface flame spread, dependent on the material, its surface condition, and its thickness. The HW coatings can be applied over suitable existing paints or varnishes, and they can also be finished by painting over with good quality paint or varnish (NOT cheap trade paints). The AEC acrylic coatings are suited to painting over HW01.
