I sent a Data Protection Act request to Barclaycard
exactly 40 days ago and this morning my statements arrived. I had asked for everything from the time the account was opened (1999) but they have only sent from May 2004 stating that

Statements prior to this date are not held on a computer or a structured relevant filing system and therefore, they do not fall under the Data Protection Act 1998.

HOWEVER, in the same letter they offer me statements from that period at £3 each.
I have looked through the Data Protection Act and can't find anything to complain to the Information Commissioner about but surely this is wrong, as the information is obviously available to Barclaycard. I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere on here that the DPA now covers all information, not just that held on computers but I can't find the thread.
If anyone can offer me suggestions as to my next move I'd be very grateful.
