Unhappy How do I get Barclaycard to go away?

I've written to Barclaycard 3 times to close my account and told them on the phone to cancel it on a number of occasions but they still won't do it! I sent them a letter requesting back dated statements which I received, I included in the letter that I wanted the account closed, and then got a further statement saying that if I didn't pay £20 by the middle of September they would close my account permenantly. My credit limit was £260ish in October which I went over by a few quid due to charges and paid them £700 in November which left a remaining balance of £50 which I didn't realise. I'm not rich but all I want is for them to close the account and clear the remaining balance, which is now back up to £270. I'm not bothered about the charges I just want to get rid of them without having to give them more money for a card that hasn't been used since October. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If they believe you owe them money and clearly they do, they will not go away until the account is paid.
If you pay them what they tell you you owe them then they will pocket your money and close the account.

If you do not wish to pay them any more money then you will have to go through the process described on this site to claim back all the money (Charges and interest) they have unlawfully taken from your account.
Assuming all of the outstanding balance comprises charges and interest on these charges, this will clear your account at which point you can close it.

Thanks for the advice I was unsure how to proceed because I was willing to go through that procedure but I thought I'd ask the question first.
