Default Equita & Council Tax

Hi all,

I am really desperate for help in this matter.

I had my house re-posessed last year and moved into a new location in may last year.

One week ago i received letters from Equita for council tax debts of approx £3000. My partner phoned up equita explaining how much we could realistically afford, they promptly said that was not enough and hung up on her. Then on the saturday "4 days" later. We have final demand letters. We do not have finances to clear this for a considerable time, and although reading through the forum, a lot to take in when my mind full of worry.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

I've said for some time that local income taxes would be fairer than council tax.

In fact, that's more or less how it's done here in Finland. There is a state income tax, a municipal tax based on a percentage of income, and optionally a church tax depending on whether you belong to a church. Even fines are usually expressed in terms of days of income.
