Unhappy Unauthorized overdraft £100

3 weeks ago, I over drafted my account by £10, I don't use this account and first noticed the over drafted from a letter. It grew to £100 plus, I'm freakin out at the moment as they wrote to me that they will charge me more.

I'm just 18 and receive EMA on this account. I don't know what to do or where to get this money.

Is it possible to clear this with the bank or something else? Help! what should I do!

Hi vojens, welcome on board

First things first, don't panic - it sounds as though this was a genuine oversight. As soon as you possibly can, open a new bank account and arrange for your EMA to be transferred into the new account. That way, at least you won't be paying all of your weekly money out to the bank for penalty charges.

Secondly, although we normally advise you to go through the reclaiming process (e.g., as in the site FAQ's), in this instance I think I'd be inclined to contact the bank and explain what has happened and how this has been a genuine mistake. Explain that your source of income is EMA and that you need this for bus fares, college books, etc. There's a chance that they may refund the charges that have already been added to the account.

Try the above first, and if you don't get any joy with them post back as soon as you can and we can advise you further.

Best of luck - keep us posted x
