Default A&L premium current bank account charges

I had a premium current account with A& L and its not been used since I have opened it because it was not having enough overdraft limit. As I have not received any monthly statement for this account, down the 6-8 months line I can see that account has been debited with £85.

So at the moment my bank balance is £-85 and I'm afraid that if I deposit any money the system will take off £85 from the money deposited. I'm afraid ... bank won't let me close the account so easily and may take a legal action if I won't pay this penalty charges. I have used the telphone banking service requesting to revert it back and promised that it was a mistake and I'll pay monthly £500 into this account. But later on I have received a letter from customer services saying that I'll need to pay those charges as they are in line with their term and conditions etc. I went to local branch but they said premium current accounts are only dealt over the phone. so it was not of very help.

I even showed the readniess to move all my savings+salary account to A&L but it was in vain.

Is there any way I can avoid those charges ?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

How exactly is the £85.00 made up?

Is it charges as you did not pay enough into your account each month - as regulated by that type of account?

Hoe many charges make up the £85.00

Have you considered FOS route as it is a small amount?

Default Re: A&L premium current bank account charges

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, I didn't deposit £500 each month into current account and that is the reason they have charged £5 per month for almost last 13 months. On top of that interested has been also charged on this debited amount. So the amount I owe to bank is £89 now. The main reason for not using current acccount was it didn't match the overdraft limit with my current bank( barclays) current account. Financial adviser at A&L did assured me (verbally) that they will be able to match it once i open current account with A&L which never happened.

FOS route - what's it?
