Angry First Abbey Overdraft Charges - £80

Hi there,

I was wondering if someone would be able to help me. I just got my bank statement through this morning to find that I have been charged £80 for going overdrawn.

This is the first time I have gone over drawn since I opened my account 4 years ago. I got charge £30 because I 'went overdrawn' I got charged a further £30 for my 'instruction no 5 for £x was paid when there was not enough money in your account' (my monthly car payment, which I mixed up dates and though was going to be taken out the next week). And another £30 for a 'visa payment for £x was paid when there was not enough money in your account' (payment to sommerfield as I though I had enough money as I though my car payment was coming out the next week).

My mum says I should phone and see if they will refund the charges as this is the first time it has happened, and I got my dates mixed up.

My question is, do you think they will even consider refunding the money (hasn't been taken out yet, will be on July 5th) Is it worth a try to phone and ask? I really don't want to waste my time and phone some call centre in India and try to explain my situation to someone who understands some simple english, I'm a fast talker and my family find it hard to understand me at the best of times! I don't know what to do, I really don't want to pay £80 because Abbey loaned my £35.11, it just seems a bit extortionate.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Ashley

As it is the first time that you have gone od on the account then, if you phone them and explain the situaion, hopefully they will agree to refund the £80.

Give it a go and let us know what happens.

Just got off the phone to Abbey, and they have let me off with all the charges. Spoke to a really nice guy who gave me lots of advice and also signed me up for e-banking. He said that Abbey had to pay my direct debit but were being nice when they paid my debit fee to Somerfield, lol. He also said that Abbey understand that customers make mistakes with dates and fall on hard times. Nice line, eh? So it's all good! I'm going to be watching my money like a hawk from now on, can't be doing with losing £80 for little mistakes.

Ashley

I love that line.

So are they saying then that if anyone else has charges imposed on them by the Abbey that they will repay them due to them being a helpful and understanding institution?

Me thinks not.

Sorry to appear cynical Ash but if you read some of the other Abbey threads then you will see why I take trhat view.

Non the less well done for getting the £80 back but as a word of warning, if you go od again, it may not be as easy.

Ash

Would you object if I opened a new post in the Abbey section and quoted that line?

I just feel that others may be interested to read and comment on it.

they won't be so kind if you go over again.

In a statement that was read out in my radio broadcast on Friday it said something on the lines that if it's the first time then they will refund. How nice of them

I had 2 charges on my statements last week, went over by just over £1 they wanted to charge me £20 for going over the o/d and £30 for them to make the payment, i phoned them up, said this isnt on, i had checked balance that morning before spending any money as i always do, and they instantly said all charges will be cancelled as the day the charges were incurred, my balance online was apparently incorrect as they were having computer problems(yeah yeah never heard that excuse before), therefore they say it was there fault not mine, when i was on the phone i did inform them i am currently taking them to court for around £2000 they seemed pretty keen to help me then.
